Napier June 14, 1869 Sir, The Ahuriri starts at 9 o'clock - in reference to the long telegram I sent you - although you only recd. it at 9 o'clock it was put into the telegraph office by me at about 3 1/2 - the reason it did not go was that Col. Whitmore and the Ministry were telegraphing to Pohui directions etc. I have sent McDonnell's pamphlet by? of the Ahuriri also 2 copies of the last Session - he will deliver the parcel himself. Mr. Russell appears rather disgruntled at the flattering position he holds as stated of the Ministry - he seems awfully downhearted. Holloway who reported for Mr. Wood intends proceeding by this steamer to Wellington. You might find him very useful. The death of the Trooper Neward has been recd. with apathy by the Public. They seem surprised at nothing and accept everything as a matter of course. I expect to hear at any hour that the other 6 whose bodies were not found with the 9 have been found elsewhere. I enclose 2 native letters - recd. from Hamlin - they may be of use. Your Honor will be kind enough to pardon the shortness of this letter as the early departure of the Ahuriri has taken me by surprise. I have the honor to be Sir in haste Your most obt. St. Geo. Thos. Fannin
