New Plymouth, May 9th. 1857. My dear Sir, Mr. Hirst, passenger by the Zingari, has kindly undertaken to deliver a small parcel to you. It contains Katatore's patiti, which was surrendered by him to Ninia natives on the 5th. Feby. last, when peace was restored amongst the Puketapu.natives. It appears that gold can be obtained in Nelson by anyone which will dig for it and so soon as the news reachs distant places, people are likely to flock there in considerable numbers. I have seen an excellent specimen collected by Langman who returned by the steamer, owing I believe to the weak state of his health. He was a miner formerly and therefore better fitted for the diggings than most people - he says that every gully contains gold and thinks that a large quantity will shortly be discovered. There is nothing fresh about the Ikamoana - the natives are waiting for an answer to Ihaia's second letter upon that subject and I expect to be eaten up on return of the Zingari. Paki and his people, not satisfied with keeping us out of the land near Katere, threaten to drive old Wi Ta Ngutu off, and 2 or 3 other natives who have cultivated small portions of it. Paki says that the pakehas are afraid of his reo, and intends that the feeling shall be extended to natives. I send this day's paper with the Superintendent's address. Faithfully yours, H. Halse. To:- McLean Esq.
