WOODVILLE

(from our own correspondent.) November 7. Things here are looking unusually brisk, what with the election for the County Council and School Committee squalls, we have our hands full. Mr Sowry was re turned unopposed to represent the Woodville Riding, although a candidate put in an appearance, but as a dispute arose with Father Time as to whether the candidate was in time to be nominated or not, the Returning Officer was of opinion that he was not, and therefore refused to accept his nomination. Some say lie was in time, while others seem to think he was not ; however, we shall see, as I believe that Mr Coltman, the candidate referred to, is going to take action in the matter, when we shall all be made wise on the subject. With regard to our school, there appears to he a good deal of discontent, although our schoolmaster, Mr Crawford, is everything that can be desired, yet he lias too many children to teach at one time. He applied to to the School Committee to elect a pupil teacher. This they decided to do, but when it came to the selection as to who should be chosen of two little girls, the Committee could not agree, and the chairman was so disgusted, that he threw up the sponge and put in his resignation, and so it rests.

The church reserve is being cleared, and in a very short space of time we shall have a very respectable building to hold divine service in. Mr Sowry is pushing the new sclioolnouse ahead, and when completed will be a very creditable piece of work. There is to be erected at once a police station, the site of which will be opposite the new schoolhouse. This will give a very formidable aspect to our little township. It is also on the boards to have a court house, and a real live mandarin, when we shall be able to have a little cheap law. This is certainly much needed, as people here would sooner submit to any loss rather than have to travel as far as Waipawa, which entails so much expense, to say nothing of the risk of being told by the R.M. that he has not time to go into their case, and will therefore adjourn it until next court day.
