MINING.

Tookey Company. —We yesterday announced that they had holed through in the Tookey ground from the drives at the Caledonian end and from their own shaft. This was effected at 10.8 feet from the Caledonian boundary end, 280 feet from the company’s shaft. The drives did not meet on the lode, as it seems that just here the whole thing is rather disarranged. The leader followed from Tookey''s shaft met a large lode running diagonally across the drive and joined it. This large lode had to he passed through, and about 10 feet beyond it, the two drives joined. The strike of the two lodes shows a difference of ;j~> or 40 degrees, and it is expected that the one is the specimen leader of the Caledonian mine, and it is expected to join- with the main lode and then to follow its original course. No gold has been seen in driving along (he course of the lodes.

George Stevenson. —The new owners of this ground have started to work, and intend to prosecute it vigorously. They will form a company and take np the ground under the new act, and make a licensed holding of it. From the show already obtained this must be looked on as a most valuable property. Star of the Thames. —On Tuesday night about 201 b. of specimens were taken from the workings of this company. The general appearance of the reef is good, and some better crushing dirt is being broken down.

Middle Star. During the flood of Tuesday night the (50 feet level of this mine was flooded. The manager informs us that there are now about 8 or 9 feet of water, at least, over the roof of the drives, which are all full. The water came principally from the surface, where it had broken through. This will prevent any operations taking place at these levels until the main low level adit is in. He (the manager) informs us that there is another reef in the ground which lie considers will pay for working, and he has gone to I own for the purpose of consulting with the directors as to the mode of operations to 1)8 pursued in the future working of the mine.

Windsor Castle. —The heavy downpour of rain has flooded tho winze going down on the main reef. There ara now some 20 feet of water in it, but that can be taken out as soon as the water ceases to run in.

North Star. —A crushing of 10 tons of stone from this mine, which has been let on tribute by the owner, was completed at the Una Battery yesterday, and gave the satisfactory return of lOoz. IGdwt. 12gr. of melted gold. This yield will pay, and is very encouraging to the tributers, who have not much further to go to get their low level in to the reef, and, as soon as this is done, they- will have fine backs to go to work on. Moa Trijsutk.—A lodgment of soz. of melted gold was made yesterday- on behalf of these tributers. This was the result of their first, crushing, and the return is not payable, being not much over a quarter of an ounce, to the ton.

City of Dunedin. —Tho crushing which was started on Monday liad to be discontinued for a day or so, on account of tlic tramway', from the hopper to the machine, having suffered by the floods, part of it having to be taken np. By' this evening, probably, the machine will be. able to get to work again, and there is a large quantity to be crushed. Criterion Battery. —Tho manager informs us that lie is about to crush stone for the Montgomery' Brothers, from the, Shamrock ground, and from the Ballarat and Rising Sun. Inverness.— First-rate reports are to hand from this claim. In the lower level, where the manager has got on to the reef,

there is a first-rate show of gold, and good specimens have been taken out of the lode, which is a good size.

All Nations. —Good crushing dirt is still being sent to the mill, and Hie crushing is looking up well for a good payable return.

Caledonian. —The main shaft has been sunk to a depth of twenty-seven feet below the main working level, and tiie stone lias not yet been gone through. There is no increase in the quantity of ■water.
