PUKECKAHU PICNIC.

A C.'.riAT SUCCESS. The people oi Pukeckahu held their annual picnic in the schcol grounds, Pukeckahu, yesterday under propiti* ous weather conditions. A large number of Uveal and residents from the surrounding districts, Taihape included., attended the emin- ■ ently successful gala. Old and young male and female were all catered for to 'the full, reflecting' the greatest crdit on the Pukeokahu people and their energetic committee, consisting of Messrs W. Beuck (secretary), \T. Docle, W. Marsh, W. Beuck, G. Piatt, J. W. Doole, E. Beuck, J. Brandt, C. Old and W. Searle. The Taihape Brass Band rendered selections; throughout, adding in no nail way to the dry's enjoyment. A sumptuous re;'- v '-t. was provided gratis by the committee. The comprdfiiensi*l3 sports programme was a great success, entries being large for all events, which were keenly contested. Interest centred in the horse events, chief of which was the open hunters' jump, won by Mr A. K. Overton's "Garrison." Mr Overton has won the event twice in succession, and: so wins outright the Miles' Cup. Mr P. Troy's "Cocky" gained second position The pony jump was won by W. Pine's "Skylark." The winner has the honour of holding for the first time the cup presented by Mr fi-. Anderson. J. Boole's "Amy" was placed second. Another feature of the afternoon Was the .ladies' . naH-(M\?in,g competition keenly contested by a large number of entrants. The final was contested, by Mrs Marsh and Miss E. Sinclair, the former eventually winning the event which carried with it Mr Loader's trophy The second pri?;e was Mr Somerville's trophy. Other events resulted as follows: Boys under 15: J. Crawford's trophy) 1; Miss M. Sinclair (Mr E Loader's trophy) 2. Novelty Race: Smith and Walker (Mr Darv'ill's trophy) 1; Beuck and mate 2. Married Ladies' Race: Mrs Kamau (Mr McLaughlan's trophy) 1; Mrs O'Keefe (Mr Bebau's trophy) 2. Married Men's Race: J Pine (Mr Knight's trophy) 1; H. Chase 2; Sandy Walker 3. Chain Stepping: Kelby 1; D. Hammond 2 A most enjoyable dance was held in the evening in the school room and continued till a late hour. SERIOUS BUGGY ACCIDENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 23. After Dalgety's sale at Whakapirau yesterday,., a buggy containing Mr Christie (DalgtHy'is /-representative);, W. H. Bennett, and three others left to catch the train for Auckland. Shortly after starting the buggy capsized, and rolled over several times, throwing, the occupants out. Christie and Bennett each had one leg broken and are now in Auckland hospital.
