COMMANDANT’S WIN ROSY PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE There was not a great deal of interest in the Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting on Saturday last, but, as expected, the presence of one or two well-bred three-year-olds was a decided attraction. Mr. T. H. Lowry’s Australian-bred colt Commandant, by Legionnaire— Bees in Amber, who cost 725 guineas as a yearling in Sydney, was having his first race when he started in the maiden event. He was expected to run well and was established favourite. He duly won, but only by a head, and lie would have been defeated had lie not proved himself a very game colt under pressure. Commandant is a well-topped and nicely-furnished colt, fairly well forward, and he' looks like developing into a. good one. Although it was his first time at the barrier in public he began well, showed speed and finally courage and stamina. Commandant is freely engaged in important races for three-year-olds this season.
