TE AROHA TOPICS
COX TO TOUR SOUTH TRAINERS’ MOVEMENTS Special to THE SUN TE AROHA, Friday. News from Matamata is to the effect that the three-year-old Gold Day is executing good work in view of engagements at the early spring fixtures. The Lucullus—Miss Floss gelding is developing into a fine stamp of a thoroughbred. ,Robustness of constitution and strength are his leading characteristics. In colour and general lines of conformation he more closely resembles his sire than any other Lucullus representative in this district. M. Lipsey still has the Muskall gelding Muskot in the paddock, but he may be put into commission again at any time. He should certainly prove equal to winning a race or two at minor meetings about New Year time. Promising Juvenile Leasehold, now being trained’ by J. Chisholm at Ellerslie. was a member of G. A. Reid’s team here up to February last, when he went back to his owner at Te Rapa. While here he showed real galloping ability, and aptitude for mustering up a good dash of speed without much effort. Mr. P. A. Swney has his three horses. Volimond, Honiton and Taumai, on the resting list just now. They are all looking well, and as they are being fed in addition to having the run of wellgrassed paddocks, they should come back to the training tracks in good trim before many weeks. Southern Tour Trainer A. E. Cox evidently intends having his team for South in good form before undertaking the journey. They are doing very consistent work without being asked to run against the watch. Indolent and Miss Albyn show undoubted signs of improvement, while Black Maire and Glenison are in nice condition. Te Kawana is listed to be at the next Waihou horse sale. The Marble Arch—Bonnie Fishwife gelding is sound, and there is no reason why he should not race well for many of the breed really improve with age. Sometimes bargains are picked up at Waihou, cases in point being those of Transformer, Taumai and Ah Wera. Trainer G. Reid left for Matamata with his team this week, on account of the better tracks there at present, in addition to more grass roads which can be used in wet weather. The new grass track here, laid down last autumn, will not be ready for use until well into September, by which time there will doubtless be a full complement of horses back at Te Aroha. The rising three-year-old Marble Arch—Amans Queen gelding has now been handled by M. Lipsey, and is already shaping up nicely. He has been trotted round the track, and will soon be in full work. An aspirant for racing honours owned by a Hungahunga sportsman is to join the stable shortly Owner-trainer R. B. Hines is busily engaged putting his juveniles through their early education. Like others they may not be taken over to the tracks until the grass gallop is open, as the plough is not at present suitable for juvenile work.
