Renovating Your Furs
The best way to alter the shape of a stole is first to draw on a board the exact shape needed, then to damp the skin side with cold water. When it is soft and pliable place it over the board, skin side upward, and gently stretch to shape, securing the edges to the board with small nails. Great care should be exercised, however, with this stretching process to prevent the skins from splitting, especially if the skins are old or inclined to be tender. The skin should be left to dry very, very slowly in a warm place. Do not, in any case, place it in strong sunlight or near a hot fire. When joining skins care should be taken to match them up in colour and length of hair, and the hair must lie in the same way. In the case of a collar, when the hair is desired to run in the same direction over both shoulders, there will be a parting or overlapping of hairs at the centre back, which in a long-haired fur will look very bulky and show very clearly. Never put furs away after they have been exposed to damp. Do not hang them near a fire to dry if they are wet, but shake them well and bang them out in a current of air, and wipe them with a silk rag. VELVET SHAWLS . To male one of the new velvet or lame shawl wraps edged with fur, get a square piece of lame or velvet, a yard square or over, and line it with velvet in a contrasting shade. Edge it with fur at the neck and the hem, leaving the sides untrlmmed. You wrap it tightly round you, and It looks for all the world like one of the smart, new jackets, but is ever so much easier to make.
