PHANTOM LORRY
WEIRD HAPPENINGS ON LONELY ROAD
MOTOR-CYCLIST’S STORY Reed. 9 a.m. LONDON, Thursday. Considerable attention is focussed on a piece of well-made and straight, though lonely, road near Hyde, in Cheshire, which is the centre of weird stories concerning a phantom lorry responsible for a complex variety of accidents. Attention was first drawn to the matter when an inquest was held on the death of a pillion-rider on a motorcycle after an accident at the spot. The driver recovered from his injuries and gave evidence that a lorry suddenly appeared from nowhere on the road.
The coroner and jury listened attentively, because it is stated that there have been 18 unaccountable accidents at the same spot within the past 18 months. None has been cleared up. The coroner suggested that the jury might go there at midnight. Curiously enough, another car crashed into the hedge at the same spot today. The licensee of a lonely inn nearby speaks of unaccountable noises at night time. The occupants of the only nearby cottage are leaving. They say they are terrified. Their dog often dashed out at the sounds, but returned cowed and trembling. On another occasion four people were knocked down on the footpath, yet the car passing at the time did not mount the kerb.
