SUCCESS IN FIRST RACE FOR CORNWELL CUP MANUKAU BOYS SECOND Special to TUB SUN DUNEDIN. Tuesday. After a keenly sailed race tba Auckland crew won the first rac. of the Cornwell Cup conteit, which was begun on Otago Harbour this afternoon. The Manukau boys were only 12 seconds farther astern. Lyttelton was third, and 2J minutes behind the second boat. Weather conditions were perfect. The course was a windward and leeward one, the boats starting Irom the boat harbour, running down toth. channel pile oft the Kitchener Street Wharf, beating up to the castle beacon, then running down again, and finally beating hack to the flnishinline. The total distance was about seven and a-half miles. Just before the race began the wind, which was very light from the northeast, freshened, and at the startins gun a good full-sail breeze hadsprun* up. Wellington was first across, followed by Manukau and Christchurch. Lyttelton and Auckland were lying farther back with Otago bringing; up the rear to leeward of the rest The crews and boats were as follow:—Auckland. Suzette (Tabuteau brothers); Wellington, Colleen (McKenzie and Stutter); Christchurch, Pauline (Beveridge and Webb); Ota*o, Zita (McLaren and Sell); Manukau, W'ee May (Grant and Andrews); Lyttelton, Pupuki (Tissman and Scott). LYTTELTON SAILS WELL A few minutes after the start Lyttelton moved up into a good posititm on Wellington’s windward quarter, b*ing closely followed by Christchurch. Manukau and Auckland were sailing level dead astern of Wellington, while Otago’s position remained unchanged. Passing Victoria Wharf Lyttelton improved its position and gradually drew level with Wellington, Otago coming up fast and taking a position clow behind Auckland. Nearing the turning mark Auckland took the lead, with Otago lyinghandy close astern, and rounded the marks few feet ahead of Otago, with Wellington, Christchurch, Lyttelton and Manukau following close behind in that order. In the beat to the castle beacon the sailing qualities of crew® and boats were fully tested, for the breew freshened considerably and a short chop made its appearance. The Auckland boat, splendidly handled, worked well to windward, but Otago, which had been in * good position on rounding the mark, gave a very disappointing exhibition on the wind, and fell farther and farther to leeward. Throughout the * beat to the cast!# beacon Auckland held its advantage. Xjyttelton sailed into second place, closely followed by Manukau. Auckland rounded the beacon about 20 seconds ahead of Lyttelton, Manukau following another 20 seconds later. ’Wellington and Christchurch then rounded in that order, Otago at this stage being somewhere in the vicinity of War* erley and completely out ot the rack AUCKLAND GOES AHEAD On the run down to the leeward mark the boats made very good tin* l Auckland slightly increasing its leadThe order of turning remained u®' changed. Otago managed to srugg» round the castle beacon a few seconds before Auckland rounded the mark ** the head of the harbour, at th:.s stagbeing seven minutes behind the the fleet. In the beat to the finisiuw line Auckland easily maintained advantage, although Manukau an Lyttelton gradually lessened "he a«* fender’s lead.
