Constable Effects a Smart Capture
THREE MEN ARRESTED ALLEGED SHOP-BREAKERS After lying in wait for intruders who, it was suspected, had broken into a shop at New Lynn last night. Constable R. Boag arrested three men. The arrest was made with difficulty, the men giving trouble. CEVFRAL shops were broken into, L but nothing of any great value was taken. Goods in all of them had been scattered over the floor. It seems that the intruders were in search of money. The premises of Mr. J. H. Savage, Totara Avenue, were broken into at 11.20 o’clock last evening. Mrs. Savage heard the sound of breaking glass and telephoned Mrs. Ainsworth who, in turn, communicated with Constable Boag. He arrived at the shop and waited, and eventually arrested three men. Other premises broken into were those of Mr. W. Whittaker, Islington Avenue, grocer, Mr. J. W. Parry, surveyor, and Mr. George, land agent. After arrest the men proved to be more than a handful for one constable, and three detectives came out to take them back to the Central Police Station, Auckland. “ALL BAD EGGS” “They are all bad eggs and have been here before,” commented ChiefDetective Hammond, when Archie Robert Windsor, a labourer, aged 23, Anthong Howley, a bootmaker, aged 20, and Henry James Boyd, a labourer, aged 24, appeared at the Police Court this morning. The three accused were charged with damaging a glass door panel, valued at ss, and belonging to John Harold Savage, yesterday. There was a second charge of breaking and entering Savage’s premises at New Lynn with intent to commit a crime. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady applied for a remand until Monday. There was no request for bail. The chief-detec-tive added that Howley was already on probation.
