MOTORISTS’ ORDEAL
CAR HANGS OVER PRECIPICE OCCUPANTS ESCAPE INJURY A narrow escape from death was experienced by a party of motorists in the Tarawera Ranges, when the car in which they were travelling suddenly swerved off the road and was only prevented from plunging down a sheer drop of I,oooft by a low mound of earth catching the rear axle. The party, which consisted of three Auckland motorists. Mr. V. S. Dalton and Mrs. and Miss Snowball, of Parnell, was on the way from Napier to Auckland, and about six miles from Tarawera when the accident occurred. Mr. Dalton jammed on the brakes just as the front of the car went oven the cliff. The two women scrambled to safety, and then by means of a length of rope, assisted Mr. Dalton to gain the bank. The party spent the night at Tarawera, and when they returned to the car it was discovered that fittings to the value of £4O had been stolen. With the assistance of a passing motorist the car was hauled back to the road.
