A. meeting called for the purpose of ‘considering the possibility of reviving } the mining industry in the Thames was ; held in the “'aihi Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening. The I Mayor, JVIr. \V. l\i. \Vallnut, presided. 311-. \Vallnut outlined the Reception l Committee’s conversation with the lMinister of Mines during the Hon. \V. ‘ A. Veitch’s visit to ‘Vaihi recently. The plight of the mining industry locally Ihud been explained to Air. Veitch, and Government assistance had been asked ‘to help the industry’s revival. It had been suggested that Dr. Henderson. ‘director of geological survey, should visit the district to discuss with local mining men the most likely areas worth exploring. Mr. Veitch had given the committee a sympathetic hearing. and promised that if any feasible scheme 'could be formulated locally, he xvould see that it received financial assistance Efrom the Government. 1 )Ir. Hopkins, superintendent of tho VVaihi Gold Mining Company, explained the formation of the various reefs that had been discovered in the district, and said that the question they had to conIsicller was Whether it was worth while going on with the formation of a company for prospecting the district. Speaking unofficially. he would say that it was, but, even though they had 21 mass of information and experience, it was necessary to have the opinions of a man with the qualifications of Dr. Henderson to indicate the most likely points for attack. 0n the motion of Mr. Wallnut, it was decided to form the VVaihi Prospecting {and Development Company with 3,000 shares at 105 each. For the purpose of making the preliminary arrangements. the following committee was formedz—niessrs. H. W. Hopkins, “K H. Toy. E. A. hlcLeay, F. Timanus, D. McVVilliams. W. M. Wallnut, F. C. V.
