Talkie Patent War May Reach Australia

There is a possibility that the talkie patent *war may extend to Australia and also affect New Zealand.

Following the postponement of three German film inventors’ suit against Hyde Park Cinemas, seeking to restrain them from showing sound films over the Western Electric apparatus, on the ground that it is an infringement of their basic patents, the German patentees announce the initiation of similar suits in other countries where Western Electric Company’s patents are employed, says the Sydney “Sun.” The “Sunday Observer” points out that the Western Electric Co. has contracted to supply apparatus to France, Italy, Spain and Sweden, while Australia, where it has supplied the leading cinemas of the Union Theatres and Hoyt’s circuits, is likely to be involved also. The Western Electric Co., in January, filed five suits in Berlin to restrict the scope of the Klangfilm Tobis patents.
