RABBITS AND ENGINES
ARRIVALS BY CUMBERLAND Another consignment of Angora rabbits (four in number) arrived at Auckland this morning on the Federal steamer, Cumberland, from Liverpool. The animals are for Mr. R. Williams, manager of the Auckland branch of the Bank of New Zealand, and he expressed surprise at the fine condition in which they arrived after the long and trying sea voyage. The ship’s butcher, Mr. J. W. Harrill, acted as their “keeper” during the trip, and his keen interest in the Angoras is evidenced by the fine quarters erected on deck for them. The animals are named Pink of, Pearl of, Punch of, and Pomp of Perfection respectively. There is also on board a sheepdog, consigned to a Christchurch resident. Just a week ago seven pups were born, and they also are looked after by the butcher. The Cumberland brought a large cargo of general merchandise from Glasgow, Avonmouth, Newport and Liverpool. The trip was made in fine weather all the way. The cargo for discharge at Lyttelton includes two 50-ton electric locomotives, built by the English Electric Company for the New Zealand Government. They are for use on the Lyttelton-Christchurch line, which is being electrified. Some difficulty was experienced in loading the locomotives at Birkenhead. One. which was put in the bottom of No. 3 hold, had to bo tilted at an angle of 45 degrees. The other was put in No. 2 hold, where there was about nine inches to spare on each side as it was being lowered.
