MAJESTIC
NEW PROGRAMME TO-MORROW This evening will give Aucklanders the final opportunity of seeing the bright programme which is now delighting patrons at the Majestic Theatre. The chief pictorial attraction is ‘‘Hangman’s House,” a story from the well-known Donn Byrn novel, with Victor McLaglen in the leading role. To-morrow the Majestic will present for the first time in New Zealand a picture entitled “Trelawney of the Wells.” This is based on the famous stage play of the same name written by Sir Arthur Pinero, and dealing with the customs of the English nobility of 1880 to look down on the stage, and on actresses in particular. Rose Trelawney is an actress at the Old Sadlers Wells Theatre in London. One day she meets Arthur Gower, the scion of a noble family, and the pair fall desperately in love. Then comes the first bar to their happiness— Arthur’s uncle, Sir William Gower, frowns at the-idea of one of his line marrying “an actress.” Hoping to destroy his nephew’s infatuation. Sir William invites Rose to live at their home, but the stifling, frigid atmosphere cramps her spirit, and finally revolting, she goes back to the stage She has lost her old fire, however, and the company is soon in sore straits, until the stern Sir W’illiam relents, and becomes interested in a new play. Rose plays the starring role in it, with a new leading man, who turns out to be —Arthur Gower! Norma Shearer makes a wonderful Rose Trelawney and Ralph Forbes a handsome and gallant Gower. Eixcellent supporting pictures and a new selection of both classical and popular music by the famous Majestic Orchestra will complete the entertainment.
