BIG SPORTS MEETING AT THAMES

THORN WINS MARATHON (From Our Own Correspondent) THAMES, Sunday. The postponed sports meeting which was to have been held in conjunction with the Labour Day carnival, took place on the High School ground on Saturday afternoon. The weather was ideal and there was a large attendance. The funds of the Fire Brigade will be augmented by about £l5O as a result of the Saturday and Labour Day gatherings. The marathon race, from Ivopu to Thames, which finished at the -sports ground, created much interest. S. Thorn and C. Biliings entered the ground together, but over the final mile on the course Billings outpaced his opponent and finished first. The race was under sealed handicaps, and with 6min. start, Thorn won, Billings, SJmin, being second. The large push-ball, lent by Messrs. Milne and Choyce, of Auckland, was responsible for a deal of amusement. The winners of the athletic events were as follow: Public School Championship Race.—J. Scott 1, J. McGregor 2.
