TO FIGHT CANCER
LONDON BUYS RADIUM
British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Thursday. The authorities at London Hospital, who already possess 121 milligrammes of radium, have purchased a further 210 milligrammes at a cost of £2,854 for use in the treatment of cancer. The radium is to be mounted in the form of needles similar in appearance to those used on gramophones. They are of platinum and contain from two to six milligrammes each. The treatment consists of inserting a number of the needles in the cells in a growth. They remain there for varying times, generally five days, and in favourable cases the growth is not only prevented from spreading, but is also destroyed. As many as 40 needles are used in some cases.
