NOTES AND COMMENTS

AUCKLANDERS FOR ADDINGTON OTHER NORTH ISLAND CANDIDATES With the Auckland candidates for Addington taking their departure for the South, affairs at Alexandra Park will be very quiet for a few weeks, and chief interest will be centred for a time in the doings of Jewel Pointer, Western King, Native Prince, Great Change, Gold Jacket and Nelson Tasker (if he makes the trip) at Addington. The Auckland team is a solid one and some of the Canterbury plums should come North. Should be Handy in Saddle Gold Jacket has been freely nominated for events at the New Zealand Metropolitan August meeting, figuring in both long-distance and sprint events. The son of Gold Bell is listed in the August Handicap (4.30) and King George Handicap (4.29). He may be driven in one of these events by trainer L. but if started in either of the mile saddle heats, Hash Handicap (2.14) and Lightning Handicap (2.13), J. Bryce, junior, will be pilot. Will Like Addington Track The Henderson-owned and trained Nelson Tasker appears among the entrants for the national trotting carnival from this end of the country, and if H. C. Nicholl’s handsome horse makes the trip, he can be relied upon to uphold worthily the traditions of the province. The son of Nelson Bingen and Sal Tasker has raised consistently during the seaon just ended and he will be in good condition if required for the South. His efforts at present are to be confined to shorter journeys as he figures in ten-furlong heats only. Class That Suits The limits set at Adidngton for the two-mile unhoppled items were a bit on the tight side for Great Change, and the sturdy little square-gaiter will tackle the 12-furlong events, which carry a limit of 3.34. While the Great Audubon gelding will find some highclass talent engaged in this division, he will not fail to let the opposition know that he is at the races. Suitable Company Native Prince has been well placed in his entries for Addington and both in the two-mile and 10-furlong heats for candidates just outside the mark the Native King horse will find plenty of scope for his ability. The Addington track will no doubt suit him to a nicety and providing the ex-Riddle represensative decides to get on the journey without loss of time in his events, he will keep the opposition busy.

Auckland’s champion, Jewel Pointer claims several engagements at the August carnival in Christchurch, both in two-mile and mile-and-a-quarter events. The game and speedy son of Logan PointerLaw Chimes is now on a good horse’s mark, but he is such a really genuine customer, and one that improves with racing, that when it comes to the final day of the meeting with its short limits Jewel Pointer will be found playing his part faithfully and well. Sprints for Preference While Western King has been accorded a nomination in some of the 16furlong items, where the limits are of a more elastic nature, the Australianbred pacer's name also appears among the speed-merchants engaged in the 2.13 mile and 2.45 mile-and-a-quarter events. He is another of the Auckland contingent that should find the Addington circuit to his liking and if the footing is firm when the fixture rolls round, the son of Rock Huon will make things decidedly interesting. Peterwah Will be There The crack Gisborne trotter, Peterwah, will be in attendance at Addington next month, and judging by the trend of his entrance papers the handsome American-bred horse will tackle both pacers’ and events. The aged son of Etawah gaye a glimpse of his capabilities at Alexandra Park last month, and he shoi;ld be in rare form to tackle any class of opponent that is likely to be pitted against him in August. Look Out for Loch Moigh Loch Moigh, the well-performed stable-mate of that splendid pacer Padlock, is likely to make his appearance before a Christchurch audience, as he is freely entered for events at next months fixture. The son of Nelson Derby and Flying Bells, raced with a lot of success this season and although he failed in his more recent essays it would not be wise for his friends to dismiss him from their minds. The Longburn-trained horse will be well forward for his next engagements and should show out to advantage. Sister Beatrice Will Keep Them Busy Sister Beatrice, who proved one of the most improved trotters in commission this season, is booked to step out on the dirt track at Addington in August, subject to the adjustments proving satisfactory to owner J. R. Corrigan. While the Nelson-Bingen-Lady Derby mare is nominated in the two-mile events for square-gaiters, she also figures in heats for pacers over the same distance and also the shorter journey of 10 furlongs. A good game mare, Sister Beatrice can be depnded upon to do well in any company if the going is sound. as matters turned out, the start was delayed nearly a. quarter of an hour through the injury to Goodstead’s jockey.

From this experience it seems better that, despite delay, a barrier from another starting-point should be procured when a breakage occurs rather than experiment with the emergency. Such breakages are so rare, however, that the incident nfay not occur again for years. It was only the result of so many horses dashing into the strands that caused the trouble. They will withstand the onslaught of a few horses without breaking.
