GRAND
“MOTHER MACHREE” “Mother Machree,” the poignant story of the love of an Irish mother for her son, will be shown at the Grand Theatre to-night. The earlier scenes are laid in Ireland, where Ellen McHugh loses her husband in a storm. With her infant son, she decides to go to America, where she hopes to be able to educate the boy. On the way to Hublin to embark, she falls in with a band of entertainers, who include the Giant of Kilkenny. In the city she loses her travelling companions, but on the wharf the Giant again appears, and tells her that he and his partner, the Harpist of Wexford, a very unusual person, are also going to the United States. Poverty marks the life of Ellen and her son, just after they arrive. Finally she finds work, and places her son in a good school. The mother toils incessantly in order to keep her son at the school, and she again meets the Giant. He succeeds in getting her a position with a circus, thus enabling her to keep her son at school. Then comes the day when the school visits the circus, and the boy recognises his mother. The second big feature is “Hivine Woman,” starring Greta Garbo.
