RIALTO AND REGENT, EPSOM

“SHANGHAI BOUND” TJp the Yangts© River from Shanghai, a hundred miles or more, Jim Bucklin, steamer captain, met a party of white people—Louden, American capitalist; Sheila, his pretty daughter; Payson, his general manager, and Algy, an English friend. They didn’t know, but Bucklin did, that food riots were liable to break out at any minute, that China’s turmoil was slowly spreading southward, that hungermad hordes might attack at any time. Such is the dramatic background of the picture, “Shanghai-Bound,” which will be shown this evening at the Rialto and Regent (Epsom) Theatres, with Richard Lix in the role of Captain Bucklin. When he told them, they were terrified. But there was still time. Bucklin had his boat, and he could take them down to Shanghai and the safety of the internationally protected areas. He could have, had not Payson, in terror, shot Scarface, leader of the Chinese mob. From then on it was fight, fight, fight, all the way down to Shanghai. The crew deserted —the mob hurrying by land to the Narrows of the river to cut off the steamer —the wealthy Americans impressed as a makeshift crew—th e hand-to-hand battle between Bucklin and the river pirates—a thrilling situation. A delightfully humorous story of a fellow with a radio “bug” entitled “No Control,” will also b© shown.
