INTERESTING CAREER AS GOLFER AND BOWLER A SIMPSON PUPIL “N orrie” Bell, junior, of Hamilton, the well-known amateur golfer who recently turned professional, has had an interesting career both in bowls and golf. In 1926-27 he was runner-up in the singles championship at the New Zealand bowling tournament, and the same year led for his father when the two were runners-up in the Dominion championship '~s. This is a unique performance in New Zealand bowling. Bell started to nlay golf in his early youth. At the age of 13 he came under the notice of the late W. B. Simp-
son. who had recently arrived rrom St. Andrews, Scotland, and was then professional at Miramar. Bell made good pm-ress under Simpson, and soon became assistant professional at Miramar. He subsequently acted as coach for varic clubs in the Wellington Province and later came to reside in H mil ton. After the war lie applied to be reinstated as an amateur, and in May, 1921, received word from the Royal and Ancienl St. Andrews, Scotland, of his cleai—nce as a professional. The same year he wot 1 TJ -milton Club championship and has held it ever since, seven years in all. He has also held :=• hampionship of Waikato for seven years, and the South Auckland championship for five years.
