BOSUNS DISAGREE
FRACAS ON WAIPIATA HAMMER USED IN SELFDEFENCE MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED The bosun and ex-bosun of the s.s Waipiata had a quarrel in the fo’castle of the ship yesterday. The bosun is in hospital suffering from concussion of the brain. rpHB ex-bosun, Angus McLean, aged 29, was charged at the Police Court to-day with causing bodily harm to Angus McKay. Sub-Inspector McCarthy said that although the charge was indictable, it might turn out that accused had only done what he was justified iu doing. McKay, who was hit on the head with a hammer, was in hospital suffering from concussion. Sergeant Angland, who was called to the ship, said that accused, who had been bosun of the ship, went into hospital about six weeks ago, and in his absence McKay was appointed to his position. Jealousy developed between the men, and last night McKay came to the fo’castle and assaulted McLean twice. Accused, to protect himself, was forced to use the hammer, as his hand had been injured. McLean was remanded to appear again on Monday.
