GIRL ATHLETES
Auckland’s Business Girls in Big Annual Demonstration SPORTS AT CARLA W PARK NOT 26 coloured jerseys on 26 vigorous League players, but 400 gaily coloured uniforms on 400 enthusiastic devotees of feminine athleticism, presented a picturesque panorama at Carlaw Park on Saturday afternoon when the Auckland Inter-house Girls’ Sports Association held its annual sports carnival. The attendance? —a record. Fifteen to twenty thousand people formed an unbroken sea of faces, in a scene of animation and almost fervid enthusiasm.
It was the day of days for the girls, and they seemed to enjoy every moment, as they drilled with almost military precision, marched with swinging arms and lissom tread, and played their games like the truest of sportsmen, while barrackers, catching the spirit of the thing, cheered again and again. The two most effective demonstrations of athletic girlhood was given in the parade of the various teams and what was perhaps the most popular event of the day, the item arranged by the girls’ brigade, in which 100 Misses “Tommy Atkinses,” clad in red uniforms and pill-box hats, took the field with sloped rifles in drill and marching display. All events were keenly contested and the gathering was run off without a hitch. CHAMPIONSHIP HONOURS The Sharman Cup, presented by Mr. and Mrs. R. P. Sharman to the house gaining the highest aggregate in team events, was won by Macky, Logan and Caldwell’s team with nine points, while Robert Greer and Sons were close runners up with eight points.
