SOUTH AFRICA'S FLAG
DISPUTE CONTINUES HERTZOG ARROGANT WILL WAIT NO LONGER By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright CAPETOWN, Monday, All hopes of a peaceful settlement of the South African flag question were shattered by the Prime Minister, General Hertzog, in a speech at Pretoria. He displayed an extraordinarily truculent and arrogant spirit. He admitted that when he returned from the Imperial Conference he desired to postpone the flag matter for some years, but this he found impossible. “We dare not wait any longer for a people’s flag for the people of South
Africa,” said General Hertzog. “We I see that disunity! and bitterness have' been caused already, and therefore it is necessary to put a period to that feeling.” The; Prime Minister proceeded violently to attack the Leader of the Opposition. General Smuts. He described him as the head of the
Empire group, .“We want peace,” he continued, “and therefore the sooner we settle the flag question the better.” I General Hertzog ascribed the opposition to the national flag to a “jingo” spirit, which, be said, caused hatred of the national movement. If the Government lost on the referendum it would by no means be the end of the flag .auqstioh,. for , DO national spirit was ever kept down by the foreign “jingo” spirit. The Government would not take a single step to make the smallest • amendment, declared the Prime Minisetr in conclusion. —Sun.
