LEAN DAY AT THE TRAFFIC COURT
BY-LAW BREAKERS “ONLY ONE CASE, SIR” If John Coates Thomas had taken the trouble to appear at the Traffic Court this morning he would have been delighted to find that the court sat for him, and him alone. “Only one case, sir,” smiled the clerk of court, “he’s charged with failing to produce his licence.” “What did I fine them last time?” asked Mr. F. TC. Hunt, S.M., groping back through the maze of a week of co*urt cases. “A pound and costs, sir.” Thus it came about that the. State is the richer, and J. C. Thomas the poorer by £1 10s. Mr. G. R. Hogan, city traffic inspector, explained the poor harvest this week. It seems that the quarterly returns of fines are required at the end of this month by those who control things from Wellington, and to save trouble, this week’s crop will be held over until next time.
