Saw Paris at Night But Lost Money
MERCHANT DUPED CONFIDENCE TRICK WORKS By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright Reed. 8 a.m. PARIS, Tuesday. While outside Cooks, sightseeing, a Brisbane merchant, named John Walker, accepted the offer of a compatriot, named John Kerr, to show him the city’s night life. They dined at the Trocadero, where they casually met another Australian, named John Doolan. After the usual pleasantries, Kerr suddenly remembered that he had forgotten to meet a bill for 100,000 francs. He asked Walker if he could lend him that sum till the banks opened and he would hand over a security in a leather case containing almost the equivalent in English notes. Walker handed over 70,000 francs. Doolan, with the case, remained as security. Suddenly Doolan said: “Excuse me while I buy some cigarettes.” Walker waited three hours, but nobody returned. The police explained that Kerr was really a Sydney man named John Ford, a notorious confidence trickster.—A. and N.Z.
