The eruption: 1 hava -spoken of was succeeded by another, and another; in fact, thejolcano was in continuous and heavy erupSon until a late hour that night and the effect of the blnck column against the mDonlight was very impressive. During the night, the rumbling noise was very Pronounced, seeming to shake the ground at times as if an earthquake W ‘*On Sundayj again, the eruptions were almost continuous. 1 have never seen anything like it in my life before, and I almost began to think that that country was a good place to be out of. One outburst on Sunday afternoon was a terrific one. The volcano sent out a loud, warning boom across the country, and then up went a gigantic column of inkv blkok ash-laden steam, and this column seemed to whirl round and round, finally spreading out m cloud shape at a great height above the cone. On Monday, ogam, up till the time I left in the express, the volcano was in continuous eruption.”
