There was keen competition for wool, and the highest rates of the aeries were realised. London, May 20. At the wool sales there is good competition at fall rates. Messrs-Dalgety and Do., Ltd., report having received the _ following cable message from their London House under date of the 18th inst. : —The fourta iperies of sales have been fixed to opea On the Ist’July, and are limited to 140,000 bales. The fifth and sixth series are to open ■on the IstlSeptember and Ist November ;respectively, and are unlimited. All arrivals up to within eight days ol the opening of the sales will be adi mittod.
STOCK REPORT. The Loan & Mercantile report as follows:—At Palmerston North yesterday we had a heavy yarding of both sheep and cattle. There was a good attendance, and we have to report a total clearance at lata rates. We quote Sheep : Low condition 4 and 6-tooth ewes 7a 6d to 9s 6d, coil ©wes 2s 3d to 4s 6d, purebred Shropshire ewes 10s to 14s, fat ewes 9a 4d to 11s Id, forward wethers 10s 7d to 10s lid. Cattle: Store cows 30s to 37s forward cows £3 15s to £3 6s, fat cows £4 13s, 3-year heifers in calf £3 as to £3 7e 6d, 18-month heifers £2 9a 6d and £3 10s, 2>£.year steers £3 11s 6d to £3 17s 6d, 3-year steers £4 15e, cows in calf £3 Bs, springing cows £6. , Messrs Abraham & Williams, Ltd-» * report:—Thursday at our usual Pal£ne?ston sal© both sheep and cattle came forward in excess of advertised numbers. All classes of sheep sold freely," especially good breeding ewes. 'We quote: Sheep. 2, 4 and 6 tooth ewes in lamb 13s, empty ewes aged 6s, 3 tooth wethers 9s to 10a 3s, small wethers Bs, good woolly lambs 9a. medium 6s to 6a 9d, small 2b sd. Cattle were harder to quit than last week, but many lines of good young steers sold well. Eighteen months steers 135 s 6d to £3 6s 6d, 18 month heifers ;jßs to 53a, 3 year heifers in calf £3 15a, 2 years small £3 15s, forward cows 33s to £3, fat and forward cows £3 5s to £8 16s, dairy cows in calf £3, £5 and £6. Messrs Dalgety & Co., Ltd., report as follows: —We had a very fair yarding of sheep and a small entry of cattle at our Taihape sale on Wednesday, the 19th inst. The market showed a decided improvement allround, and prices realised were in all classes highly satisfactory to vendors. All lines were quitted at auction as follows Small lambs to 5a scl, wether lambs 7s 7d. good mixed lambs 7s lid to Bs, ffat and forward empty ewes 8s lid, mixed age ewes in lamb to 11s 6d, store empty cows to £3 2s. Messrs Dalgety & Co., Ltd., report on their Palmerston North sale held on Thursday, 30dh inst., as follows : We had a fair entry of cattle, nearly all of which were quitted at auction. We quote:—Empty store cows 85s. fat cows £8 11s to £4, fat heifers £3 17s, empty heifers in good order £2 15s, 15 to 18-months heifers 365, 18months steers £2 8a 6d, weaner heifers 31a, weaner steers 33s 6d, 3%year steers £5 Is.
