NEWSPAPER OFFICE BURNT.
Press Association. New Plymouth, April 17. The jobbing and printing departments of the Taranaki Herald were destroyed by fire at 1 o’clock this morning. The literary and linotype departments escaped, being in a brick building with steel shutters over the windows and doors. The building was Insured for £650, and is a total loss. The machinery and plant were insured for £1750, and it is feared that the damage is irreparable. Both insurances are in the New Zealand Co. The origin is a mystery. The office was left apparently sate atjll.2o p.m. by the publishers of the weekly paper. A slight outbreak occurred early Wednesday morning in the same building, when the* May Ot way alarm brought the brigade before the fire had any hold Last night the alarm system had not been re-instated owing to the difficulty of obtaining thermostats. The paper will be published as usual.
