ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Per Press Association. Dunedin, March 30. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association’s Championship Meeting was held on the Caledonian grounds to-day. Light rain fell at intervals, but the weather was not so cold. A heavy shower of the previous day left the turf heavy, so that the fine performances were surprising. ‘ The attendance numbered about 3000, In the 100 Yards Championship Woodger, the Wellington flyer, had no difficulty in beating Opie, the Canterbury crack, in the fast time of 10 l-sseo. Woodger also won the 830 Yards Handicap with ease, his fine stride earning plaudits from the crowd Much interest was taken in the appearance of Guy Haskins, the ex-American champion, and he justifld his. great reputtation by winning the HalfMile from Harding, of Wellington, and running second in the Mile to Steele, The 130 Hurdles was a gift to Keddell (Otago), Murray (Canterbury) had the misfortune to clout a hurdle, and spoilt any chance he had of winning. The Canterbury man, however, made amends by winning the Quarter-mile Hurdles very easily. The Mile and Three Mile Walks gcreatod great interest, these contests being fought out between P. H. Stubberfield (Canterbury) and Fitzgerald (Wellington). In the Three Mile event Fitzgerald just managed to get home, but the general opinion was that it was a dead heat.
