DIVER’S TERRIBLE PREDICAMENT.
A sailor named Frank Russell has been arrested in New York on a| charge of attempted murder of a diver. His victim was George Smith, an expert who was investigating a wreck 50ft under water in the rapids of Hell Gate. East River. Smith found the air supply suddenly fail him, and “ t no response given to his signals he gave himself up for lost. The cause of the air failure was high above him in the tug, where a man named Benjamin Parkins, who has been attending to the diver s pump, was engaged in a fierce fight With Russell. The pump lay forgotten in the quarrel, which the entire crew were watching, regardless of the suffocating, diver. Rnssell snatched a crowbar, struck Parkins senseless, leap’tt ashore, and disappeared. Thqn.‘ode of the crew re* membered tkat. Smith was under water, and 'the diver was drawn ( o the surface seemingly dead. It was not until artificial respiration had been tried for an hour and a half that he recovered.
