From Our Own Correspondent. The annual meeting of the Debating Society was held on Wednesday last, when both report and balance-sheet were adopted. The Society is in a flourishing condition, having a membership of 52. This number will, no doubt, be considerably increased this season, [as it is intended to form a Young Men’s Social Club in connection with the institution. A committee consisting of J. McKenzie, Matthews and Russell was elected to bring forward a scheme on which the club could be most efficiently worked. For the ensuing year the following officers were elected :—President, Mr J. Matthew; vice-presidents, Messrs F. S. Guy, J. Decke and Dr. Gregory; secretary and treasurer, Mr G. P. Russell; committee, Messrs W. Guy, J. McKenzie and Miss Powle. “Should Trial by Jury be Abolished?’’ is the subject for next debate. The ‘affirmative will be taken by Messrs F. S. Guy and Decke and the negative by Dr. Gregory and G. P. Russell. It is pleasing co state that over £27 was realised by the sale of work and gift auction recently held by ths Methodist Church. The committee voted £ls towards the special effort which is being made to liquidate the present debt on the circuit, and £lO to have the church painted. Although Cupid has of late years been playing havoc in the ranks of bachelors, and leading away many captives, recruits are continually coming forward. Tills was evinced Toy the largo number of bachelors present atjiheir annual ball, which was held in the public hall on Friday evening. Numerous invitations had been sent out and met with satisfactory response. The floor was in capital dfder and dancing was kept going till the early hours. The much-coveted honor of belle fell to the lot of Miss Powelky of JKimbolton. Mr W. Red of Marton Block had a narrow escape from drowning last week. He was crossing the Oroua rivef at the Main South road ford when his horse stumbled. Mr Red was washed into a deep hole and it is little short of a miracle that he managed to clutch a projecting rock.
