TEACHERS AND SICKNESS.

It is stated that in consoquonco of 'tho epidemics which havo boen raging daring tho present year—influenza, whooping cough, and measles —no fewer than 200 school teachers in the servico of tho North Canterbury district would have to be dispensed with if tho provisions in connection with the average attendance are adhered to. Iu one of the city scools (East Christclrarch) it would involve tho dismissal of six teachers. - At a meeting this morning of the committee of the North Canterbury District Institute of the New Zealand Educational Institute, it was decided to communicate with the Department through tho North Canterbury Education Board, and urge tho Minister of Education to substitute the average of last year for that of tho present year, which latior, it was stated, should ho disregarded altogether.
