Tho ordinary monthly meeting o£ the above was held on Saturday last. Present: Crs Brown (chairman), Hammond, Howie, Osborne, Jackson, Oliver, and Phillpotts. Correspondence was read : From E. ,S. Kounthwnite, forwarding

bis account, and stating there are certain allowances included which were not expended. He thinks that it will bo fair to charge commission upon actual cost

only, viz., J 83873 6s 3d. From F. Saxton, offering lor the right of cutting cocksfoot on Bidge Koad, and £1 on Mr Eichard’s road. From J. L. and G. Hartstone, Wood-

ville, asking Council to spend money on

the Malton Block Eoad. From G.P.0., Wellington, forwarding a statement showing tho revenue and expenditure on account of Komako telephone office, J2G4 19s Id, and stating that there is a refund due to Council of

£2O Os Id. From Utuwai School Committee, asking to bo allowed to move the fence on tho School Keserve nearer the Makiekie road. This would make the road safer and give the committee a chance to plant trees inside.—Granted. From the Clerk Kiwitea County Council, stating that their engineer had already taken measurements of the proposed bridge site, and an application had been sent to the Government fqr an engineer to report on the proposed work at London’s Ford .—Decided that this

Council take steps to have a commission set up to take evidence required in order to arrive at a decision as to whether a bridge is required or otherwise on the Oroua river at London s Fold. From S. H. Palmer, asking Council’s permission to build verandah on roadline. —Granted.

From Department of Eoads, re opening and closing roads. No consents must be written or shown on original plan, which

must show only survey work. From Oroua County Council, stating that particulars re Pohangina bridge contribution will be forwwded. From A. Dick, Umutoi, stating that he would not pay special rate until he was informed as to whereabouts of money lying to credit of loan account. From Dr Gregory, stating that ho was willing to pay £2 per annum for connection with Utuwai private wire.— Doctor’s house to bo connected, Council to guarantee cost of same. The Chairman said that he had gone into tho workings of the thirds and suggested that a finance committee be setup. Cr Phillpotts" said that a finance committee nSed to exist but no one turned up at the meetings. Further discussing the present state of the clerical work Cr Phillpotts asked why the books had not been brought up to date. The present clerk had been in office for five months and .£2O had been paid for extra clerical assistance, and he thought they should 1 have something to show for tin* ex-

penditurc. The Chairman explained that the worn had been allowed to get very far behind by the late clerk and there was a lot of work to bring the books up to date. He had been chairman since 28th November, out of which time he had three weeks to attend to Council business owing to illness, and the holidays, and ho declined to bo held responsible for what had tahen place during the last six months, the Councillors agreed with the Chairman’s remarks and, Cr Hammond said that no feeling ought to be brought into the

matter. A deputation consisting of Messrs Sinclair and Moore, waited on the Council and asked for assistance in protecting their laud from the river encroachment Tiie Engineer said there was a reserve belonging to the Council in danger. The Council agreed to grant the request for the purpose of protecting their own reserve. The Treasurer reported General rates collected iHS2O 8s 3d, outstanding X 371 4s lid, special rates collected, d 11,125 2s sd, outstanding £4Bl 13s 3d, balance at the Bank, general account, Cr., JHO-1 2s sd; No. 1 Loan account, Cr., £417 12s 2d ; cash in hand, £llß 13s Od; amount to be passed for payment to-day, .£1035 1/s 2d. Special orders striking special rates on To Awa Loiui and Apiti Township Footpaths were passed at a special meeting j and Thursday was fixed as the half-holiday for the county. The Engineer reported -Awahou lading : The bridge at the end of No. 11l Line on the Main road, has been attended to, and a groyne has been placed across the creek below the bridge. 1050 feet of decking has been used for the Duudas bridge, a small slip has been removed froiu the end of the Pohangina bridge, and a portion of the road has been remf3tailed. Other instructions he had been unable to carry out. Mangaone ; The metalling contract is very satisfactorily carried out, but the metal is of a poor quality. Tamaki Biding ; The metalling contract on the Delaware Flat has been commenced ; a foot-bridge GG feet long has been erected across Jackson’s- creek in the Forest Reserve j wheel decking has been put on the bridge in front of Mr Toxford’s.

Umutoi: Bo metalling contract on Mount Richards and Makiekic roads GOO yards of metal has been delivered and asking for a first progress payment on the work.

Man^apikopiko: Tho metalling contract on Table Flat and Main Bidgo roads are being carried out satisfactorily. Ho recommended that tenders be called for the delivery of 400 yards of metal for repairs on tho Main Cross road, and also 400 yards of metal for Norsewood road repairs. Resolved: — That Mr Fitzherbert be requested to have an Order-in-Council made to correct the error in advertising re tho special order for Opawa Creek Bridge. That Messrs Sinclair and Moore be given 2-cwt of wire netting, providing they protect Council’s property and road, i That Messrs Bowley and Wylas tender of £0 be accepted for right to cut seed on Mount Richard and Makiekei Road; also that Frank Saxton’s tender for cutting seed on Ridge Road be accepted. That steps be taken to have a third book compiled, giving each settler a detailed account of thirds paid on each section. That tho clerk bo instructed to summons for all outstanding rates. That the resolution declaring a special rate of 5d bo altered to 3jd on Delaware Bead Loan, No. 23. That tenders be called for 400 yards of metal for repairing Apiti-Norswood Road, and 400 yards for Apiti Main Bead and township, tenders to be in by next meeting. The Chairman said that the general expenses, office, insurance, charitable aid, etc., totalling £GOO, was divided between the ridings, one-seventb each, and he considered the Government subsidy of £3OO should bo divided by one-seventh. —This suggestion was adopted. Cr Osborne said he wished it known that ho would be resigning bis position at tho end of the financial year, March 31st. He got nothing but abuse, and ho was tired of it. The matter of clerical assistance was left in the bands of the chairman and the clerk. The appointment of roadman for Tamaki Riding was left in tho haodsW the engineer, and F. Klink for the Pohangina Biding. I XL Slmdbolt’s tender of 18s per chain for digging drain at Pohangina township was accepted. Expel the Poison.
