CHILDREN'S COMPETITIONS.
j _^ — These competitions, inaugurated by the Otaki Literary and Debating Club a few year* ago. have steadily gained in popularity, and are now eagerly looked forward to, not only by the younger people, but by a very large number of the adult section of Hie community as well. Held originally in the Druids' Hall, it was soon realised that a much more commodious building was required to seat those who desired to be present, and for the past two or three years the event has been held in the Otaki theatre. This year again the theatre has been engaged for the pupose, and the competitions will be held on Tuesday. ; -July 31st., commencing on the afternoon of that day, and ending with a public •erformaneu of the children reaaiied in the evening. As these competitions are undoubtedly of great educational value the committee of the Literary and Debating Club earnestly appeal to all teachers and parents to encourage those under their charge to enter for some of the events. The ambition "to be at the top" is a splendid spirit either for one's child or one's school, and ought to be fostered and encouraged. It conduces to efficiency—the present bat-tle-cry of the world. Only by wholehearted support from parents and school-teachers can this deserving even! hope to continue thriving and prospering. Monetary donations for prizes are needed and here all who have the little one's interests at heart can help. These may be *ent in to the ".Mail" office or to any member of the committee. A new feature to be introduced this year is fancy-step dancing, sailors' hornpipe, Or some oilier dance. The essay competition is specially one which should receive a large number of entries. Two years ago about 70 entries were received; hist year only two or three. An explanation for this is hard to find. The subject set this year is one that should appeaLto most children—A description of their ideal school, and most, children carry this about in their minds. It is hoped that they will put it upon paper. Who knows how far their suggestions will bear fruit in the conduct, and management of our local schools.' Rally round then, and make the evening a success.
