MUSICAL OR BENEVOLENT.
To the Editor. Sir, —Tour correspondent “Visitor” inquires as, to whether the people of Otaki are musical. benevolent, or interested in affairs of the township. A fen- are—a very few. One has only to see what meagre support that is given to any thing towards the advancement of the town, see how the efforts of the willing few will be held up to ridicule, and then you will see Otuki on a whole, is utterly devoid of any civic pride whatever. Why try to improve the place? What was good enough forty years ago ought to be good enough now! Give them a really first-class entertainment, they apparently have not the ability to appreciate it; their ignorance and narrow-mindedness doe* not soar above a third-rate vaudeville steeped in vulgarity, or a jitovie depicting something of a sordid nature, or possibly a one and sixpenny hop with a supper thrown 'don’t forget the supper. Mr Editor). Watch them scanning the newspapers for results of various race-meetings, hoping to be able to iff their own pocket*, for voa won’t see them putting their hands in their pockets to h«*lp the poor. 2So •Sir, to all appearances Otaki people are not guilty of taking interest in the affairs of the town, nor musical, nor benevolent either. Why bother the poor ignorant creatures? In conclusion I quote from Proverbs:—“Whose stoppeth his ear at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall sot be heard. ” —1 am, etc., EESTDENT.
