OTAKI'S MARDI GRAS.
A mooting of the Committee in connection with the proposed Mardi G-ras was held oil Wednesday. Mr Williams took the chair. Mr Davies stated that after conferring with the chairman it had been agreed to ask Mr Brandon to join up with the Committee, for hi.- position and abilities meant' a great deal towards success, It appeared to have been an oversight at the public meeting not to appoint him; everybody .appeared to assume he was on the Committee. Mr Williams welcomed him and asked him to take the chair. He also considered that as Mayor of the town it was his place to be at the head of all public affairs, and would now ask him to take charge of the meeting. Mr ! Brandon, however, offered to work as a member, not wishing to take the chair. The Committee, however, were unanimous that the Mayor must be chairman and he later took the position.
Good reports were received from the organiser (Mr Crichton). Though no definite committee had been set up the districts round about had received the scheme well, and were showing a great deal of enthusiasm in the matter. It was considered advisable .for one member of the Committee to go with Mr Crichton when attending any public or other meeting culled for the purpose. Th<» Mayor was particularly anxious to avoid any impression that the scheme was for the benefit of the Borough only, it was a district affair. The organiser is to report at a very early meeting the result of interviews he expects to hold within a few days. ft was suggested that the committee could with advantage be made larger, and several names were submitted and approved of. The Committee also decided to hold the ceremony in May, making it a May queen affair.
