A Ford motor car, belonging to Mr .j. Henwiek, of Te Hour, was totally destroyed by lire last night, on the Tasman road. Otaki. The car was being driven by Mr Tim Bevan at the time. It is thought that the fire wa.due to a leakage of benzine. All efforts to extinguish the flames were unavailing, and the car was completely vrecked. A Ere at 12.25 o’clock yesterday morning at. Auckland destroyed Archibald Clark and Son’s Zealandia shirt and collar, underclothing and Tent factory at Grey Lynn, a large two-storey ’ uilding of iron and wood. A fire rar-.h- destroyed the same factory on August 29th. ’ The fire involves a total loss. The insurances amount to £33.900. The fire also destroyed a cottage occupied by Miss Drummond, and its contents, A reminder is given of the dance to be held at Te Horo to-night, in aid of the Anglican Church organ fund. It is understood that the work of j. -; Q g off and improving existing n:.cks over the Tararuas from Grcytown to Otaki will be commenced on Friday or Saturday next, when Mr Catehpole and a gang of men will commence operations. Mr F. tv. Vosseler, of the Tramping Club, was in the district at the week-end and journeyed berond Table Top, but the weather was too unfavourable to continue the trip. In view of the work it is proposed to hold a meeting of the Otaki Committee at an early date. A most pleasing feature at the Otaki djwpr -how last Friday was the display of svoodwprk and drawing by boys attending the Otaki Satire Col-, lege. Special prizes had been offered for these classes, and the. exhibits —a yen considerable number —made a gee showing. The woodwork showed the ilia.- sad mads excellent progress In this work, being neat and workmanlike. while the drawing irons nature was specially good. The .Natives are particularly clever at drawing, and the specimen* exhibited were exceedingly good. Mr Will-, principal of the Col-. lege, received many congratulations os the College exhibits.
At the ceremony of handing over the stakes for the New Zealand sculling; championship race, Fogwell intimated that he was placing a deposit, of £25 in the hands of a stakeholder for a challenge to Hannan for a championship race to be rowed before Christmas, probably in Pieton harbour. Fogwell said this would be his last race, win or lose.
The Otaki Methodist S.S. anniversary services will be held on Sunday uext, special serviees being held at 11 n.in., 2.30 p.m., and 7 p.m. All three services will be conducted by the Rev. Arthur Ashcroft, of Palmerston North, secretary of the New Zealand Conference.. The children have been practising special hymns for some weeks past, and bright, attractive serviees are anticipated. The anniversary social will be held on Tuesday evening next, when a programme of musical and elocutionary items will be given by the children. The distribution of prizes will also take place. At the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday Mr Evans. S.M., continued the hearing of charges of profiteering laid by the Board of Trade against: Wellington wholesale firms in connection with the sale of tweed suitings. The magistrate reserved In decision in the eases against Bing, Harris aud Co. and Robert Wilson and Co. Counsel for the prosecution then announced that he had been instiueteJ by the Board of Trade to withdraw the informations against R. Jamieson and Co. and Miller and Ahearn, because the firms named had satisfied the Board that the cost of replacement would be almost as much, if not quite as much, as the price at which they had sold to the tailors.
