SEVERE EARTHQUAKE
A mail telegram says the Continent was shaken by severe earth trembles on October 30 and 31 and November
At Rome the place was affected severely on the morning of the lastnamed date. People were roused from their beds at 5.40 o'clock, and fled to the open square. Great consternation prevailed. The convent at Santa Maggiore was much datneged, also, many of the old palaces in the city. At the prison of Regina Cosli, the terrified convicts broke into open revolt, and were only driven back by troops from neighbouring barracks. The shocks were confined to the province. In Romo four palaces and the Bank of Italy in the city are so fractured as to be unfit for occupancy. The Pope on being awakened by the tremble betrayed no alarm at first. His inquiry was for news from the city. FINANCIAL SCARE IN FRANCE. Political events in Paris, though of great importance, were eclipsed on November 9th by financial affairs assuming the proportions of a catastrophe. According to recent telegrams the Paris Bourse was like a big battlefield after a defeat. The number of banking houses that have closed their doors is very great, but the number of private persons who have been ruined in still greater. All classes of society have been carried away by the mining craze. The oldest actress of the Theatre Francois has been ruined.
