OAONUI.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Miss Roberts has returned from her trip to Canterbury, where she haa spent her Christmas. She is welcomed back, as the Post Office has been closed temporarily during her absence. She opened the school on the 29th. The Committee intends shortly taking steps to get up a large picnic as usual. Mr J. C. George, proprietor of the Butter Factory, has been in the habit of taking samples of milk for testing by the “ drip ” system. The suppliers not being satisfied* they asked Mr George to alter the system of taking samples, and revert to the* old system, viz., dip a sample out of the receiving can. Mr George complied with the request immediately. The suppliers anticipate higher percentages of batter fat by taking samples in this way. ' _ ■ Messrs Collins and Sullivan have completed the metalling on the Manila Road. We have had a visit from Mr Waite, Government Inspector of Butter Factories. It is to be hoped good will eventuate from his visit. A bridge up the other side of Stony River has collapsed. It is in this district unfortunately. The question now is, Will the Taranaki Council of Wisdom act on its former lines in such cases, and put up a tollgate to pay for it ? Between here and Opunakc we required three bridges. One was erected by Mr Maxwell; another, upwards of £2O, was subscribed to rebuild; another (Heimama), where a gate is in full swing with a full-blown collector ; another (Taungatara), endeavours were made to erect a tollgate there. As all of the vehicles, which use the county road north of Puniho escape the tollgates, why not remove the Puneho gate to Ketikeri ?
