PETROL ALLOWANCE
ALLEGATION OF MISUSE Wellington. Oct. 18. ‘‘l am prepared to say there is a substantial misuse of petrol by the ordinary motorist as well as by the military,” said a member of the Automobile Association ‘Wellington* at the association’s annual meeting. “I have acquaintances who are able to keep their cars running frequently. If one and a-half or two gallons is the agreed quantity, then let everybody get that quantity and be treated alike.” Some speakers claimed that many l special “business” licenses were being j used to provide petrol for running from : the owner's home to business and back, and the cars remained parked through
the day. except where the owners used them to take them home to lunch and back again afterward. The council chairman. Mr E. A. Batt, said that the supply now allotted to private motorists was the utmost consistent with the safety of the Dominion, giving reasons for his statement. He disagreed with the South Island Motor Union's recent demand that the allotment should be increased Stocks must be kept up. he said, against a possible difficulty of supply.—P.A.
