NOTES WRITTEN IN BLOOD
Melbourne. Sept. 23. Slashing his left wrist with a piece of sharp steel, an A.I.F. soldier, 20, scratched farewell notes to his mother and a girl friend with a match dipped in blood from the wound. The soldier had been arrested on Saturday night and locked up at North Melbourne watchhouse on a car theft charje. His notes, on scraps of paper, were found in the cell on Sunday. They asked his mother for forgiveness, and scrawled "Love to Pat.” Watchhouse attendants found him lying on the floor of the cell, and he is alleged to have s-.id that he had swallowed the steel he had used to ensure ending his life. Yesterday he was making a good recovery in a military hospital. The steel he had swallowed was recovered in an operation.
