LAND FORCES QUIET
AIR ACTIVITY IN DESERT SUPPLY VEHICLES ATTACKED (Rec. 10 a.m.) Rugby, Aug. 27. A Middle East communique states: “There was nothing to report yesterday from the land forces. There was smallscale air activity in the battle area but our long-range fighters again successfully attacked enemy supply vehicles on the coastal road.”—B.O.W. % MAORIS* GRIM FIGHTING (Fee. 10.45 a.m.) London, Aug. 27. The New Zealanders’ attack, which is better described as a raid, was against a strongly held Italian position at El Mirier just south-west of the Ruweisak ridge. It occurred on a bright moonlight night. The Maoris went in with fixed bayonets and withdrew after barely an hour’s grim fighting, bringing back more than 30 prisoners. Their own casualties were very light.—P.A. DEPUTY MINISTER IN MIDDLE EAST (Rec. 10.35 a.m.) Rugby, Aug. 27. Lord Moyne has been appointed Deputy Minister of Statt in the Middle E? to assist Mr R. G. Jasey. The volume of work carried out by Mr Casey has greatly increased and the presence of a second Minister will enable visits to be made to the main cc ntres outside Egypt. Lord Moyne will have Cabinet rank. —8.0. W.
