WILL THAT WAS MISREAD

VALET LOSES £IB,OOO Because he exchanged the calling of valet for that of waiter, Mr Granville Owen Sampson has lost £IB,OOO. Mr Sampson was valet to the late Sir Charles W. E. C. ITartopp, to whom lie proved the most admirable of Crichtons, Sir Charles died, and in his will, left his faithful servant £IB,OOO “for a service I can never repay.” But —alas! —Sir Charles’s will had been misread. The £IB,OOO was left to Mr Sampson on condition that he was in the employ of Sir Charles at the time of the latter’s death. Not long before Sir Charles died, he was posted to Teheran, in Persia, in the course of his duties in the Diplomatic Service. Mr Sampson was married. Tie could not take his wife to Persia. So, sadly, he left Sir Charles, and found a post as head-waiter at the Conservative Club. And so he has missed £IB,OOO.
