HEAVY RAIN

FLOODS FEARED AT KARAMEA (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, 20th January. The Secretary of the General Post Office received the following message from the postmaster at Karamea timed 11 a.m.: “Rained heavily during night and river swollen considerably. Still heavy showers. River rose fifteen inches in last hour, and there are fears of heavy flood. One hour off high tide and river still rising. Up country waters are over road near Market Cross. Road blocked between there and Karamea. As yet no water around Karamea township.” FLOODS IN WAIRARAPA MASTER.TON, This Day. Six floods have been experienced in the Wairarapa during the past fortnight. The river is in high flood and has completely blocked the intake, cutting off the supply, with the result that the main reservoir in the upper plain is nearly dry. It was still raining heavily in the ranges at a late hour last night and water is coming down the river in considerable volume. TROPICAL DOWNPOUR AT AUCKLAND AUCKLAND. This Day. A tropical deluge of rain started just before noon and halted all pedestrian traffic in the streets for half an hour. Gutters rapidly overflowed into the pavements and many streets became sheets of water through which motors ploughed. The Dominion championship bowlers nearly all finished their morning games, but one rink match was postponed with two heads to play. Steady rain is now falling.
