NO IMPROVEMENT
UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM IN CHRISTCHURCH
(By Telegraph-Special to “The Mail")
CHRISTCHURCH. 17th January,
No improvement in the seriousness of the unemployment problem and its consequent distress among numerous Christchurch families is reported from various relief depots. At the Salvation Army Addington men’s home the number of men accommodated nightly continues to average about 150. Several men have been into the county in search of harvesting work and have returned without success They assert they have never seen so many men carrying tlmir “swags." “We are having a constant fight to raise enough money to keep the home open,” said Staff Captain Dry to day. “There is no prospect of any large body of men going out to work and while they remain penniless we must provide them with shelter and meals. If the sustenance grants which we hear so much about were paid the men could pay a little toward their keep, and we should he able to do more than at present.”
