THE RELIEF COMMITTEE

MEETING THIS WEEK MAKING HOMES HABITABLE (From Our Own Correspondent) A meeting of the- .Murchison Relief Committee, was bold on Monday. 1 hero were present : Messrs Stewart (chairman), Bartlett, Lynch. Morel, Badeock, MeWlia, Hodgson‘and the secretary, Mr Hugh Fraser. The chairman introduced Mr La Tranz of the Public Works Department, who said his instructions were lo provide one fireplace and a tank at. each settler’s home. Mr B.idcoek stated that in the Matin Valley t.lin only two nouscs requiring atl,cutiou were his own and 11. C. Miller’s. Mr Bartlett reported having visited 0 ( J houses to see what was required. He. suggested that care he taken that no work was overlooked. In some eases a householder thought nothing was needed and later the repair men were called hack. Mr Bartlett stated that lie had been as far as Longford. The chairman said ho was afraid there might he some difficulty in transporting tho necessary materials owing to tho condition of the roads. Mr Morel asked if the Bellevue House could bo salvaged and erected as a workmen’s hut. It was resolved to refer the matter io Mr La Franz. Messrs McConochic and L. E. Hill reported that there were, no damaged buildings in the Howard and Tulaki districts. The condition of tho roads was referred to Lv Mr La Franz and it was resolved 'hat* Hie County Overseer be requested io supply Mr La Franz with all possible information. Mr MeWlia referred to the case of the dwelling formerly occupied by Mr Hoplev. Mr La Franz said bis instructions were for outside the township. If was resolved to refer this matter to the Nelson Committee. Mrs A. J. Gfalbaz wrote enclosing £5 14s, being proceeds of a social in aid of the Relief Fund' at Foxliill. Tho Town Clerk at Nelson wrote asking if any more clothing was required. Mr Bartlett reported a. ease where a young man’s hut had been broken into and bis blankets, clothes and hoots been stolen. It was resolved .to apply for a pair of blankets and boots for this man, and also for a miscellaneous assortment of clothes. Mr Bndcoek referred to the need for a few tents to bo loaned to people unt,il tho houses were habitable. It was resolved to procure six tents 8 by 10 with Ay 10 by 12. ■ „ , Mr Hodgson referred to Mrs Divans bouse and the chairman stated that this would come under Mr La-Franz’s instructions. J. S. Roberts wrote re lack of adcess. , , Mr MeWlia stated that, m the case of several farms in that locality destruction of road access was tho main damage done. In his opinion access by opening the old road would be cheaper and better than via the Shenandoah. - Mr D. W. Win waited on - t-lio Committee in connection with Kerr’s Bridge, which was his only access. Tho chairman slated that- this Com-

niitluc had been approached, but had not approved of the application. It was resolved that the Public Works Department be asked to give Ml’ Win access. Tho secretary suggested that when dealing with local applications,-the CommiUco appoint a small committee of not more than three, as so much of the information was of a strictly confidential nature, but that every member of the commit<ce should know the amount of assistance applied for by each appliAftcr considerable discussion, Mr Hodgson moved' that the Committee as a whole deal with the applications down to and including questions one to seven only on the prescribed form, the rest of the answers not to, be made known to the Committee. The motion was seconded by Mr Lynch and carried. Mr Bartlett referred to the need for access to gravel and sand on the Duller River bed. Some of those engaged in repair work' had used bags and wheelbarrows to carry this material. Mr McWha stated that about hub an hour’s work would open the road. The chairman gave his assurance that this would ho attended to.. Mr IIod"son referred to tho tired tor lank and. stand at 11. B. McLaren ft as an urgent matter, and some slight repairs to an outer building. It was resolved to ask Mr Stringer, to do this. It was resolved that all applications for relief be in by Saturday, 10th August.
