FINANCE IN AMERICA

YEAR’S SURPLUS £37,000,000 WASHINGTON, 2nd July. “Tho United States starts the new fiscal year of 1929-30 with a surplus of £37,000,000 and a public debt of under £3,400,000,000—the lowest since, the war,” said the Secretary of the Treasury, Mr Andrew Mellon to-day. Customs duties yielded £120,000,000. “All the Government finances are generally highly satisfactory,” added Mr Mellon. “Income tax receipts have grown to £430,000,000 —a record figure.” This is chiefly attributable to the widespread prosperity and the profits of last year’s bull stock market.
