ASSAULT ON CARETAKER
BLOW AIMED WITH AN AXE "DANGER TO WHOLE DISTRICT - Armed witlra,ibll of;maps ail'd attempting lb justify I 'in§' actions by reference lo them, Patrick Carr, the old man who has been causing considerable concern to the police of the Swanson district by camping in a whare at the side of a road, pleaded not guilty in the Police Court yesterday to a charge of assault. Joseph Gordon Bond, caretaker of the Swanson Domain, said accused was carting down a hedge with an axe when witness remonstrated with him. Accused immediately raised the axe and aimed a blow, at him. Witness closed with him, seized the axe and threw it away, but accused renewed the assault with a large stick and later with a sharp file. Accused’s attitude had been very dangerous. An eye-witness of tho assault said that if Bond had not been an active man he would have been killed.
Carr denied having committed the assault, and tried to explain that lie was justified in cutting down the fence. • ‘‘l am not concerned with that,” said the magistrate, Mr F. K. Hunt. “I have to decide whether you assaulted the caretaker,, .and I believe him. Accused is mental. I will remand him in custody for a week for medical observation. It is hard to know what to do with him. He is a danger.to .the whole district at present,”* ’
